Housing Soundscape Ecologists

This project provides housing for two soundscape ecologists conducting biodiversity and environmental impact studies within the SSSI boundary of Swanscombe Peninsula, Kent.

These ecologists focus on the acoustic and landscape ecology of both natural and human-made environments.

Housing for Soundscape Ecologists balances the needs of ecologists and the environment, using self-built, lightweight timber structures to minimize ecological impact.

The site lies within a vibrant grassland, with a defined path providing easy access while minimising environmental impact. Native shrubs are scattered across the landscape, supporting diverse ecosystems and local wildlife habitats.

Establishing this site presents the challenge of conserving these habitats, yet offers the ecologist a unique chance to live within the ecosystem itself. Immersed in this natural setting, the ecologist can observe and engage directly with the landscape and its inhabitants, gaining invaluable insights while carefully minimising their footprint.
